vagejs vs Webflow and Wix
Hosted builders or files you own.

Pick Webflow or Wix if you want to design pages by dragging things around in a browser, have several people editing online, or need a shop, bookings or member logins run for you. Pick vagejs if you'd rather own your site as plain files, host it anywhere (often for free), and let an AI assistant such as Claude Code or Cursor do the editing, with SEO files and checks built in.

Which should you pick: vagejs, Webflow or Wix?

Webflow and Wix are hosted website builders: you design in their editor, and the site lives on their servers. vagejs is a static site generator: your site is a folder of text files on your computer, and it builds into plain web pages you can put on any host.

  • Pick vagejs if…

Your site is mostly pages and posts, you're happy for an AI coding assistant to make the changes, and you want to keep the whole site in your own folder and Git history. There's no subscription to keep the site online, and moving to another host means copying a folder.

  • Pick Webflow or Wix if…

You want to see the page and drag elements into place, several teammates edit from their own browsers, or you need features that run on a server, such as a store, bookings, member areas or form handling. Both also have AI tools that build a first draft of a site for you.

Who is vagejs for, and who are Webflow and Wix for?

Webflow and Wix suit people who want to work visually and never think about files, hosting or builds. You log in, change what you see, and press publish. They also suit businesses that need things a plain page can't do on its own, like taking payments or managing bookings, because the builder runs those for you.

vagejs suits company sites, landing pages, docs and blogs where the content is the point, especially if you already use an AI coding assistant. You describe a change, the assistant edits a Markdown file, and vage check catches broken links or a missing description before anything goes live. If you're still working out what matters for a site an assistant will edit, our guide on how to choose a static site generator for AI coding assistants has a checklist and a one-hour test drive.

How do you edit a site in vagejs, Webflow and Wix?

In Webflow, designers lay out pages on a visual canvas, and people with the content editor role change text, images and CMS items in a simpler view that keeps the design locked. Several people can work at the same time. Wix offers drag-and-drop editors too: the classic Wix Editor, and Wix Harmony, where you can also chat with Aria, Wix's AI agent, while you build. Both let you invite collaborators with different roles.

With vagejs, each page is a Markdown file: a few lines of settings at the top, then the text. You can edit it in any text editor, in the local editor that npm run dev opens in your browser (a form for each page with a live preview), or by asking an AI assistant. Every project includes an AGENTS.md that tells the assistant where pages live, which commands to run and what needs your approval.

The tradeoff is real. The vagejs editor runs on one computer, not online for a whole team, and there's no drag-and-drop canvas. If your team wants to log in from anywhere and design by eye, Webflow or Wix fits better.

Can you take your site with you from Webflow or Wix?

This is the biggest difference. Wix says its sites need to run on Wix's servers and can't be exported to another host; you can transfer a domain you bought from Wix to another provider, but the site itself has to be rebuilt elsewhere.

Webflow lets you export your HTML, CSS, JavaScript and images, but only on paid Workspace plans. The export leaves out CMS content (your blog posts, for example, which you can download separately as CSV files), ecommerce, user accounts, localized pages, password protection, form handling and site search. So an exported Webflow site is a starting point, not a working copy of everything.

A vagejs site is already a folder of files you own. vage build turns it into plain HTML, CSS and images, and vage deploy publishes to GitHub Pages, Cloudflare Workers, Cloudflare Pages or Netlify, showing you its plan first and waiting for your yes. Moving hosts means pointing a different host at the same folder.

Which is better for SEO and AI search: vagejs, Webflow or Wix?

All three cover the basics. Webflow generates a sitemap each time you publish and lets you add robots.txt rules in site settings. You can upload an llms.txt file you've written, and on Enterprise plans Webflow can serve AI agents a Markdown version of each page. Its health scan gives your site a score and suggests SEO fixes. Wix keeps your sitemap up to date as you edit, lets you edit robots.txt, and writes an llms.txt for you once your site is upgraded and on its own domain.

vagejs writes the sitemap, robots.txt (with optional settings for AI crawlers) and llms.txt from the pages that really exist, on every build, plus page descriptions, sharing images and structured data. Turn on markdownCopies and each page also gets a plain Markdown version. vage check stops on broken links, missing descriptions and invalid structured data before you publish. None of this guarantees rankings or AI citations, on any platform.

Where are Webflow and Wix stronger than vagejs?

For many businesses, these settle it.

  • Visual design. You arrange pages by eye, with no code and no files.
  • Online team editing. Several people edit from any browser, with roles that control what each person can change.
  • Features beyond pages. Stores, bookings, member logins and form handling, run on their servers.
  • Nothing to install. No Node.js, no terminal and no build step.

Where is vagejs stronger than Webflow and Wix?

vagejs keeps the site in your hands.

  • You own the files. Your site is plain text in your own folder and Git history, not an account on someone else's platform.
  • Host anywhere. Any static host can serve it, several for free, and you can move whenever you like.
  • Built for AI assistants. Your own assistant edits the real files, guided by AGENTS.md, and vage check names the file to fix.
  • SEO files and checks in the box. Sitemap, robots.txt and llms.txt from the pages that exist, checked before every deploy, plus a link lock against injected spam.

Questions about vagejs and Webflow or Wix

Can I move a Wix site to vagejs?

Yes, but by rebuilding it, not by exporting it. Wix doesn't let you export a site to run on another host, so you copy your text and images into Markdown files and the public/ folder, add redirects in vage.config.ts for any addresses that change, and then point your domain at the new host. An AI assistant can do much of the copying for you.

Can I move a Webflow site to vagejs?

Yes. On a paid Workspace plan, Webflow's code export gives you the HTML, CSS and images, and you can download your CMS items as CSV files. Turn the pages and CMS items into Markdown files, keep or rebuild the design as a vagejs layout, and add redirects for any addresses that change.

Do I need to know how to code to use vagejs?

Not much. You need to run a few commands, such as npm create vagejs@latest my-site and npm run dev, and Node.js 22.12 or newer. After that you can edit pages in the local browser editor or ask an AI assistant to make changes. If you never want to open a terminal, Webflow or Wix is the easier start.

Is a vagejs site cheaper to run than Webflow or Wix?

Often, yes. vagejs is free and open source, and a vagejs site is plain files, so any static host can serve it and several have free plans. Webflow and Wix host your site as part of their own plans, so the cost depends on which plan your site needs, for as long as it's online. If you need a shop or bookings on a vagejs site, add the cost of the service you'd use for that.

Start with one command.
You'll have a site running in a minute.
